The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China has just lowered its curtains. Masters of China Studies Program students paid attention to the congress in their own way. During the News Mandarin course yesterday morning, the international postgraduate freshmen had a deep contact with the 19thCPC National Congress by means of press releases self-reading，interactive questions and answers with teachers and watching live TV.

After the announcement of the dates for the 19th CPC National Congress, the teaching agenda of the News Mandarin course was fine-tuned so that the thematic unit Current Politics would coincide with the congress. The course content of yesterday included two parts: the first part was learning from some recent news report about the 19th CPC National Congress; the second part was watching the new CPC leadership meet press live. The teacher printed and distributed the origin text of the press to the students before class, because they previously had little acquaintance with the course content. Three pieces of news were selected as reading texts, including the CCTV News Week reports on the opening and the first half of the agenda of the 19th CPC National Congress, the press conference of the educational representatives and the closing meeting.

During the class, the teacher firstly explained why we should learn from the 19th CPC National Congress and why the congress could attract worldwide attention. We could learn from the historical experience of modern China that China should find its own path towards political modernization. We should adhere to the leadership of the Communist Party of China. As the grand congress of CPC, the19th CPC National Congress would definitely influence the domestic and foreign affairsof the whole country. The teacher then introduced the names of the organizations and leadership of CPC related to the congress, such as the Central Committee，the Standing Committee, the member of the Central Committee, the member of the Standing Committee, the General secretary and the Chairman of the Military Commission. After watching news video, the teaching deeply analyzed the content of the news, for example, why is the transform of the social principal contradiction very important. Comparing the usage of social contradiction with its daily one, the teacher pointed out that this is a term of Marxism philosophy, which highly fits to the Chinese traditional culture. He showed the students the motion picture of Yin-Yang fish which symbolizes that the contradiction motivates the movement and development of everything. The relationship between people’s desire for a happy life and unbalanced and inadequate development is like the relationship between demand and supply in economics, for that they are not on parallel lines and are contradictory. And the contradiction between them is exactly the dynamic of social development. The mission of CPC is to lead the people and to eliminate this kind of contradiction. The deep interpretation improved students’ understanding of the inner logic of the reports and their identification with Chinese people’s political life.

Then came the interesting section of watching the new CPC leadership meet press live. Some students took photos and some wrote down the keywords. The TV live wasn’t over when the bell rang. The students stated in the class and watched over the press of their own accord. The homework of the class is to write their own understanding of the 19th CPC National Congress.

In such a short one-half-hour course, the student found the new approach to Chinese cultural, especially the political culture. The Bulgarian student Missa said thanks to the teacher after class as she learned a lot about Chinese culture from the course.
