Immersive Tea Culture Experience with Tea Lovers

On December 8, Lecture Series of China Studies was held at Hai Club. The lecture invited Associate Professor Volker Heubel from the Department of Philosophy at Tongji University to lead international students in exploring Chinese tea culture in the context of Chinese aesthetics of living.

During the event, Volker Heubel first introduced the origins of Chinese tea culture, elaborating on the significance of tea culture to various social classes in ancient China by emphasizing the role of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty in promoting it.

Volker Heubel also introduced the philosophical thoughts and connotations of Chinese aestheticians represented by LIN Yutang and JIANG Xun. He focused on LIN Yutang's "The Art of Living" and Jiang Xun's "Four Lectures on Taste," pointing out the importance of tea in Chinese aesthetics of living. From the perspective of human culture, tea has also made significant contributions to fostering friendships and social progress.

To provide students with a more immersive experience of tea culture, Volker Heubel elaborated on tea culture activities represented by Wuyi Mountain tea culture. He demonstrated the traditional Chinese tea preparation and brewing processes with exquisite tea sets. As students watched in silence, it was as if they had traveled back to ancient China, quietly appreciating the elegance of traditional Chinese tea culture. Tea served as a medium, tightly connecting people from different cultures and backgrounds.

It is also a witness to the civilization that has developed in China over thousands of years. This lecture not only provided international students with a deeper understanding of Chinese tea culture and its philosophical underpinnings but also gave them the opportunity to personally prepare, make, and taste tea.

Discover the amazing factory of Future Stitch 以“未来针迹”织就“袜届艺术品”

Egor Gnutov (张天有)

GCM 2021

Today we visited a Future Stitch socks factory, founded in 2017. The building itself looks very modern from the outside. It also looks good indoors. They even have a small art gallery with some interesting paintings and a huge, 4-story-high mural.

I was also fascinated by the production process. I’ve never been to a socks factory before, so it was very interesting for me personally to know how they are made. Another noticeable point about this company is that their design is very good. When we went to the exhibition hall, I saw a lot of cool, stylish and sometimes hilarious socks designs.

Overall, I think this trip was a lot of fun. I hope University will organize more of that kind of activities in the future.

Stance gave me a great impression and inspiration of how a great showroom, office, and factory should be managed. Not only the high quality of products, but their energetic vibes and philosophy make everything special.

Kristina Ponamareva

GCM 2022

The thing that surprised me the most is the quality of the socks. I have never seen such high quality socks. Each of the products of Stance is unique and I am happy that we were given a chance to see them!

Punyisa Sittikarnthai  (徐秋月)

GCM 2022

It is a great honor for me to visit Stance, because this is a well-known company that manufactures high-quality socks that are appropriate for all types of sports, as well as for casual attire. The socks are so precisely detailed that we can clearly see a person's face's features. Additionally, the factory and buildings have incredibly impressive exterior and interior designs that are highly distinctive. Furthermore, they value the emotional and physical well-being of their employees and offer facilities like a basketball court and a fitness center so that they can feel more at ease and prepared for work.

Taking Root in Chinese Soil – China Studies Students in “Hangzhou Citizens Experience Day”

In October, first-year international students in Zhejiang University’s China Studies program participated in “Hangzhou Citizens Experience Day” under the leadership of Professor Lin Ka. Attending the event provided the students with the opportunity to see the streets and local communities of China and to experience local culture for the first time.

“Citizens Experience Day” is an annual exhibition of life and culture in Hangzhou. Since the first Hangzhou Citizens Experience Day in 2008, the annual event has contributed to internationalization and cross-cultural communication in Hangzhou. Zhejiang University’s China Studies program has maintained close ties with the event and participated for the tenth time.

Hosted by Ms. Zheng Xiaojie of the Hangzhou Municipal Party Committee, the China Studies students first visited Hubin Pedestrian Street along West Lake to experience how Hangzhou is using technology to transform the pedestrian experience. Smart guides installed around West Lake not only provide the same information as traditional signs but also provide the location of nearby available parking spaces in real time. The smart guides also provide public transportation information, restaurant guides, timetables for West Lake cruises, and the schedule of a musical fountain.

After strolling the Hubin Pedestrian Street the students came to the next stop, the Shangyang Community Neighborhood Committee in Shangcheng District. The students viewed the community’s security station, local college, community management office, and community assistance office. The students also learned about the community’s management principle of “personal affairs handled by the individual, community affairs handled by everyone through consultation”. Through the visit the students learned about the organizational structure of a neighborhood committee and how it works, as well as its indispensable role in helping to mediate neighborhood disputes and family conflicts and to organize community activities.
