Mandarin Elective Courses

The Mandarin Elective Courses at Institute of China Studies offers comprehensive and practical language instruction from beginning, intermediate to advanced levels on a semester basis. The instruction meets multiple needs by people with various background.


Register for Mandarin Elective Courses if you want to:

  • Study Chinese for personally or professional reasons

  • Enhance your skills in reading, vocabulary, writing, listening, speaking and grammar.

  • Prepare for HSK tests

  • Study alongside other international students in one of the best universities in China.


Eligibility 

Mandarin courses are available to all international students registered at Zhejiang University International Campus, including undergraduate, graduate and exchange students. Interested students may check the course schedule and register during the first week of each semester. 


There will be a Mandarin Elective Courses introductory meeting during orientation week on September each year. Please note that at the meeting, both administrators and instructors will be available to answer any questions regarding the course rules and requirements, and then trail courses will be offered. 


Course Schedule

All Mandarin courses meet twice a week on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule for 13 weeks per semester. Each session lasts for 100 minutes with a 10 minutes break in the middle. Please click here to see the 2017 Fall Winter Course Sehdule PDF.pdf



Enrollment number:8-20

To ensure the most effective learning and development results the class size is 8-20 learners. If the class has not enough students, the class would be cancelled. Students who signed up can switch to the other class. If registration of class has reached capacity, students who want to learn the class but did not sign up are allowed to audit the class, but they are not eligible to enter the final exam.


Credits and Certificate: 

Sign up students who study in the Fall semester of 2017 and pass the final exam will get 2 credits for each course. Students who register and complete the study in a whole year, 2017-2018 academic year, can earn 2 credits and 100 Chinese class hour certificate.


Tutorial Office-Hour

Once classes have met for the first time, instructors would release their tutorial office-hour schedule either on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Students are allowed to reserve one 20-minutes slot per week to meet with the instructor. Chinese Characters Learning

This course helps learners overcome the difficulties in learning Chinese characters faced by most foreigners. It is suitable for students who do not have any previous knowledge on Chinese characters, and helps students to know how to read Chinese characters and Chinese texts. During the first 10 weeks you will study the strokes of Chinese characters, the order of writing the strokes in a character, the different structures, the culture of Chinese characters, some frequently used Chinese characters and the source of Chinese characters which refers to how Chinese characters were created. For the last 3 weeks you would study the formations of Chinese characters. By the end of the course, students can expect to acquire a basic knowledge of the inherent law of Chinese characters, a basic vocabulary, and some basic skills required for Chinese characters reading and writing.

Elementary Chinese writing

The objective of this course is to help learners transfer learned Chinese characters, grammar, and vocabulary into narrative writing, and gradually train for expressive writing. It is suitable for beginners of Chinese language learners who have passed HSK2 or have known more than 400 Chinese characters. It offers a basic introduction of grammar and syntax of Chinese language. You will begin with useful words, sentences structure, introduction and additional exercises for one topic. By the end of this semester you will be able to write short paragraphs. The writing topics cover something of yours, someone you know, somewhere you go, your hometown, your hobbies, your pets and etc. You will write a short composition about 80-100 words on each topic. After this course, you should not be afraid of writing in Chinese. Feel free to use Pinyin instead of characters at first.

Intermediate Chinese writing

The purpose of this course is to develop intermediate Chinese students’ ability to read and write Chinese composition through sentences structure introduction, grammar exercises, discussion of topic, writing exercises concepts. It is suitable for intermediate language learners who have passed HSK4 or have known more than 1200 Chinese words. Nearly every week students will study a new lesson and write a topic more than 100 words. Problems in students’ writing will be discussed in the class. Reading and learning model essay will also be taught in this course. Students will experience the pleasure of using Chinese, and at the same time, improve their Chinese writing skills. By the end of the course, students can expect a solid knowledge of Chinese syntax and sentences structure, a richer vocabulary, and the skills required for writing in advanced Chinese or HSK5.

This course aims on students who have passed Listening & Speaking Chinese 1 or learned Chinese over 200 hours.  We have topics such as getting to know someone, making travel plans, having dinner at home of a Chinese friend, and dinning in a restaurant. Through practical, task-based, and culturally rich approaches, you can master not only the fluency of speaking Chinese on daily topics, but also have a deeper understanding of Chinese language and culture.

Chinese News & Articles is for students who has passed HSK 5 or above. Teaching materials include spotlight news in audio and video format and articles published by traditional and new media. The feature of this course is to provide an access for students to dive in a 100% mandarin environment. This course is offered every semester, with a total of 56 learning hours (4 hours per week). The final score consists of 6 parts, which are attendance (5%), class participation (5%), assignments (10%), in-class quiz (10%), final oral examination (20%) and final written exam (50%). 

Advanced Chinese

Advanced Chinese is a comprehensive Mandarin course for students who have passed HSK 5 or equivalent level. The main teaching material is Experiencing Chinese, Advanced Course I, 2012-09-01, Higher Education Press, with extra readings added each week. Advanced Chinese covers two semesters, with a total of 112 learning hours (4 hours per week). Students may enroll in either or both semesters up to their learning experience. The final score consists of 6 parts, which are attendance (5%), class participation (5%), assignments (10%), in-class quiz (10%), final oral examination (20%) and final written exam (50%).
